Slovenia 2026 - Local Election Voting Rights

This vote is consultative. Parliament does not have to follow the result, and the vote does not itself change the law. Local elections choose mayors and municipal councils. The next ones are on 15 November 2026. The question is whether only citizens of Slovenia and of other EU countries should have the local vote, and not citizens of other countries. From 2002, citizens of countries outside the EU could vote in local elections if they had a permanent residence permit and a registered address in Slovenia. A law that took effect on 2 September 2026 removes that right. The Constitutional Court has refused to suspend the law and has not yet decided if the change is constitutional. Those residents are not on the November local roll. A yes vote supports this limit. A no vote opposes it. Neither result automatically restores or removes the right. EU citizens keep their local vote under EU law.
