Robust Democracy
Jersey functions as a stable parliamentary democracy with a long tradition of self governance and the rule of law. As a British Crown Dependency, the island maintains its own legislative assembly, the States of Jersey, which oversees domestic policy through a system of transparent governance and regular, competitive elections. The judiciary is fully independent, ensuring that the legal system operates without executive interference and that the rights of citizens are consistently protected. While the island is integrated into the global financial system and faces external regulatory scrutiny, its internal political environment remains defined by high levels of civic engagement, institutional stability, and a media landscape that operates freely. The absence of significant political polarization or structural threats to democratic norms allows for effective public administration and the reliable enforcement of constitutional protections, sustaining a high level of institutional trust among the electorate.

A concise introduction to Jersey, together with notes on how power and law are organized, to put local ballots in context.
Jersey and the other Channel Islands represent the last remnants of the medieval Duchy of Normandy that held sway in both France and England. These islands were the only British soil that Germany occupied in World War II. The Bailiwick of Jersey is a British Crown dependency, which means that it is not part of the UK but is rather a self-governing possession of the British Crown.
However, the UK Government is constitutionally responsible for its defense and international representation.
